From mere observation, it has now become a fact that most white girls that come to Malawi, for whatever reason end up with a Rastafarian or something similar found along the lake side. I am not stating that this is a bad thing, for love is found in odd places, but I am just merely pointing out its common occurrence.
Most of these young women will come with a fantasy in mind and leave with a dreadlocked husband, who after visiting for 6 months, will come back to Malawi, only to apply for a settlement visa out of this place. Is it attraction or exoticism that is bringing the two worlds together? Is it mere intrigue experienced by Joseph Conrad or is the world really changing. Ever so often, not only along the lake but in the cities, you will find young mixed couples. Which is strange when all Malawian girls seem complain about is finding that good Malawian black man. Are the white girls taking them all or have the black men decided to explore the white possibility. I was once told, “White is the new black! My sista’s have never gone out of style; I just like to switch it up a little.” Is that all it is really? Switching it up? Or are Malawian black women faced with a bigger problem than this.
However, the same can be said about the black girls that frequent the UK and bring back goodness knows their grandfathers if you will. Only that they are white and their term of reference is husband. It is quite absurd when you witness the mismatched couples strolling in and out of visa offices. The strange thing is that they all claim to be madly in love with each other. I guess age and race are now a thing of the past.
I am not a bubble buster but is it just me or is the rest of world missing something? Surely a 21 year old would not find romantic wonders in a 75 year old white male. There is not much to justify her attraction to him, but I can understand his side of the story. Or could this be the nzungu complex taking over, or just the mere need to leave Malawi permanently as a soon possible, to be a widowed white man’s wife? The same can be said for the young opportunistic Rasta’s who manages to charm the European girls into wearing a ring in exchange for an all expenses paid trip to Europe and beyond.
I believe there should be some sort of tourist awareness course for the young and naïve blonde girl looking for love in Africa. This is the magical fairy tale which most can vouch against. The brave ones that move to Malawi are usually faced with a divorce certificate a year down the line when the black sista comes back in style. Oh my poor Merrielle’s! As for the old white men, aren’t they lucky they have their interests in the hands of their children! In that way this African, full figured, kinky haired, curvaceous chancer cannot get hold of his retirement money when he is gone. Well, whoever said love has anything to do with it, money and weed make the world go round.

no victims
acacia on Sat, 06/05/2010 - 21:34thanks andida, a nice balanced summary. ah yes the old dirty white man bankrolling his young glamorous-but-black-skinned teenager (several spring to mind). but then again the dirty rent-a-dread holding hands with a plump, plain european tourist. such stark inequality, such blatant extortion, opportunism knows no limit !!!! tut tut. and yet i would argue that all parties are happily aware of the trade-offs and enter these relationships willingly, eyes wide open, no victims here, only winners. except the poor little naive white girl who thinks its true love, perhaps for her i can feel a little sympathy. if only it was love.
Lol!!! I can not believe you
