ALBUM REVIEW :

RELEASED: JUNE 2009

Rating: **** Afros

Hailing from The U.K., this duo (consisting of singer Elly Jackson and co-writer and co-producer Ben Langmaid) has made an impressive debut with their self-titled album La Roux.  A nod to 80’s synth pop with catchy melodies, and hooks you’ll either instantly like, hate or grow to love. La Roux’s sound isn’t anything new, musically, yet stands out as something fresh and highly anticipated in the current musical climate. You may be familiar already with their singles such as “Quicksand” and “In for the kill” (an earworm that once enters your head, will be impossible to get out). And their current single “Tigerlilly”, which is a perfect pop song with a punch that is sure to become a radio hit of 2009. Other notable mentions include “Bulletproof “& “colorless color” which is reminiscent of euro pop band Ace of Base.

Dreamy summer tunes “As if by magic” and “Armor Love” would fit comfortably on a Lily Allen album. Closing song Growing pains finishes the album with a touch of new wave spunk that echoes its way throughout this album. La Roux is magnificent and will gain an increasing following as they tour this around the continents.
