Have you ever sat down in a crowded room and wondered ‘what’s that smell?’ When you took your eyes around and used your nose accordingly, you discovered that, that ‘smell’ was actually someone’s feet!!! You must have thought disgusting but it’s a life fact isn’t it? People’s feet do smell! However,   Feet odor (FO) is something that you can either choose to live with or prevent.  We believe in the latter, prevention of FO. Smelly feet can destroy a first impression by one whiff, never mind how brainy, smartly dressed or charming you are, smelly feet are guaranteed to work against you.

Scientifically, the origin of the feet odor comes from a bacterium that feeds on sweat this happens after the sweat has been trapped in footwear for awhile. This bacterium produces isovaleric acid that causes the odor. Stress, certain drugs and a condition called hyperhidrosis (sweaty foot) also cause FO. As we all know on a hot day or when we are nervous we tend to sweat and so do the feet. Feet have more sweat glands than any other part of the body, so they do sweat profusely. The problem is, this sweat cannot evaporate like it does on the hands hence the odor. Smelly feet can become a chronic problem. It has also been observed that men may tend to smell more than women. This is because men have higher testosterone levels, testosterone influences high sweat production. However, this observation may be relative to certain individuals.

Now that you know the causes, here are a few tips of how to prevent smelly feet:

A good hygiene routine is the best way to start

1.       Bathe your feet daily in lukewarm water with soap (preferably an antibacterial soap) and do not forget to clean between the toes

2.       Change socks at least once a day but if you sweat a lot then also change your shoes

3.       Avoid wearing smelly shoes; do not wear the same shoe daily as they tend to become damp and wet with sweat.

4.       Try to dry your shoes regularly under the sun after you have used them

5.       Get into the habit of wearing sandals as they do not cover the feet much and help to keep the feet fresh and dry

6.       Wear socks, although it may be a hustle to wear socks every time you put on your shoes, it is a bad practice because the sweat from your feet stay in the shoe, making it smelly and bacteria prone. Do take care of your feet

7.       Drink a lot of water; it is a better way of fighting body odor

8.       Alternatively, dust your feet with foot powder. This helps keep your feet dry and will also help to destroy the bacteria.

If these preventative measures do not work for you, then seek professional help from your local GP.
