If you asked anyone in Malawi about rock music a couple years ago, you
were probably going to get weird looks and be told off for trying too
hard to be western. Their debut album Woloka Africa May 2009
has changed all that. Mafilika are a five piece rock band resident in
Lilongwe. Whether you watch them perform live or listen to them the
effect is the same, amazing! Mafilika is an edgy blend of afro, jazz,
rock and reggae, making their sound unique and refreshing. Their lead
vocalist and guitarist Ernest is reminiscent of a young Jimi Hendrix
and he plays a mercilessly riff. Having performed at Lake of Stars
Music Festival 2009, The Mundial Music Festival in the Netherlands and
Mozambique, the local rock gods are taking the world by storm. With
singles like Ndikafikako, Woloka Africa and Ndiinu Mfumu
you are guaranteed a rock out session glazed with afro beats, a little
of everything for everyone, Mafilika are a true musical inspiration for
Malawian music.
