We have fashion designers in this country but Mia Nisbet has taken fashion into a new direction. Now based in Blantyre Mia owns MIA by Mia Nisbet, a line that fuses recycled fabrics with traditional textiles to produce a collection that combines the richness of African textiles with western styling. Her design concept is ethical fashion that not only unites two cultures but it is sustainable and designed to be wearable. MIA by Mia Nisbet is an upcycled collection that aims to train and bring financial independence to tailors recruited to work with the MIA label which in turn will have a lasting and beneficial effect on the local communities. One important tenet of the design platform is her commitment to eschewing the waste and consumerism of global fast fashion culture and embracing what people have in their wardrobes and reinventing it.
