On January 20, 2010, the President of the republic of Malawi, Ngwazi Dr. Bingu wa Mutharika, announced his engagement to the now first lady designate Ms. Callista Chapola Chimombo. 

Mutharika is a widower and Callista who was the former minister of tourism 2004, is a widow. They both have children from their previous marriages.

The couple hosted their traditional engagement ceremony on the 14th of February 2010, Valentine’s Day ,at their residence; the State House,  in Lilongwe, as confirmed by a statement from the State Houses’ administration.

Currently the first lady designate is a senior member of National Governing Council of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party and she is a former legislator. The President is a newly appointed leader of the AU.

The first couple is to be wed on the 1st of May 2010. The nation is geared up for a celebration full of pomp and unity. The president’s daughter Duwa married her sweetheart Tonderai last year in December.
